Even in ascent, a rope's not a bad idea on this. The best scrambling/mountaineering day out thereabouts is up Clogwyn y Person, east along Crib Goch, then down via the north ridge (as above). 1 The Clogwyn y Person Arete is a quiet route up Snowden which avoids the crowds until you reach Crib y Ddysgl.
